Reserva de la Familia is the Cuervo family's private line, made apart from the rest of the house at La Rojeña, NOM 1122 — the oldest working distillery in the Americas — in copper pot stills rather than columns, from eight-to-ten-year organic agave grown in the estate's richest volcanic soil, using only the inner heart, roasted seventy-two hours in masonry ovens; the Extra Añejo launched in 1995, and Drinkhacker notes the line now spans Platino, Reposado, Cristalino, and the original. The Cristalino is aged as an añejo in charred American and French oak, blended by master distiller Alex Coronado, then charcoal-filtered to remove the color while keeping the barrel's vanilla and spice, and hand-labeled and wax-sealed at 40% ABV. Expect a nose of cooked agave, vanilla, honey, and a faint toasted oak with the line's signature spice, opening into a silky, rich, gently sweet palate of agave, caramel, cinnamon, and almond with a clean, long finish and no color to give the age away.
