Renais began not as a gin project but as a wine one: the Watson family has been making Chablis at Domaine Watson for more than three decades, and when actress Emma Watson and her brother Alex set out to build a gin, they built it from the vineyard itself. Réserve Familiale is distilled from salvaged Grand Cru grape skins left over after pressing for wine, blended with a distillate made from Kimmeridgian stone — the same mineral-rich rock that gives Chablis its signature flinty character. Botanicals include juniper, grains of paradise, linden flowers, and acacia honey. The nose is classic London dry: heavy, biting juniper over a sultry angelica earthiness, with peppery spice and dried anise and florals winding things down. On the palate, this is no gossamer modern gin — powerful juniper, rosemary, and thyme deliver an immediate wall of green, piney herbs before a brisk citrus lift appears, followed by a growing sweetness from that acacia honey. The finish stays lightly sweet, floral, and lingering. Bottled at 40% ABV, it's built for gin drinkers who want intensity, and it holds its own with tonic as well as neat.
